Global Enterprise and Emerging Markets

Fundamental economic, political, and social changes have been underway in emerging markets for more than a decade, occurring in numerous dimensions and at an unanticipated pace. The transformation of these markets is having profound impacts on both the nature of international business operations and the growth of the world economy. The program on Global Enterprise and Emerging Markets (GEEM) provides an independent, non-partisan, and interdisciplinary forum to forge innovative approaches to identifying and capitalizing on business opportunities and mitigating risks in emerging markets that engender both significant commercial as well as social returns.

Initiatives

The Nuclear Policy Initiative

The Nuclear Policy Initiative is the FPI’s most recent contribution to an established legacy of shaping nuclear policy debates.  Under the leadership of Deepti Choubey, a nuclear policy expert with a track record of delivering real-world outcomes reducing nuclear dangers, the Nuclear Policy Initiative is FPI’s hub for original research and analysis on international nuclear policy, building and extending the capacity of the Washington diplomatic community on current nuclear issues, and advancing policy debates on nuclear and other contemporary challenges. For instance, the Nuclear Policy Initiative to date has convened a series of Nuclear Security Roundtables, partnering with the Meridian International Center, and involving diplomats from the 53 countries participating in the 2016 Nuclear Security Summit hosted by the United States and experts from nuclear industry and non-governmental organizations to enhance understanding of nuclear security issues and Nuclear Security Summits.

Conflict and Humanitarian Crises Initiative

The Conflict and Humanitarian Crises Initiative focuses on the challenges facing the international humanitarian system in dealing with the dramatic increase in conflict related humanitarian crises.

Cultural Conversations

Cultural Conversations, an innovative program directed by Azar Nafisi, was launched in 2009 and serves as a stimulating forum for U.S. and international scholars. We provide an alternative and autonomous space, independent of a specific political agenda.

The Betty Lou Hummel Memorial Lecture

The annual Betty Lou Hummel Memorial Lecture presents new perspectives on international policy challenges from leading global thinkers with support from the Betty Lou Hummel Endowed Fund, funded with a generous gift to SAIS from friends of Betty Lou. The First Annual Betty Lou Hummel Memorial Lecture took place in February of 2015 and was titled "Why So Much Geopolitical Turbulence?”, featuring Robert D. Kaplan.
